ACLU: Audience Research, Content Strategy, and UX Design
About the Project
From activists seeking to know their rights before heading to a rally where they may be arrested to donors seeking to support landmark victories protecting our rights, the ACLU website needs to support a WIDE variety of audiences with very different needs. When the ACLU says they fight for everyone's civil rights they really mean it, and their website needed to show it.
Our audience research and stakeholder interviews helped us understand and prioritize key audiences, and clarify the role of the website in supporting fundraising, advocacy, and marketing efforts across the organization. This led to a clear content strategy that was tailor-made for the people managing and creating content for the audiences they hoped to engage.

A robust research and discovery phase was essential to hone in on a clear direction for the website and prioritize the journeys of primary audiences. A big focus of the IA and interaction design focused on the navigation and how to best organize the many issues and sub-issues the organization is working on at any given time. A balance was found between educating visitors and highlighting the ways in which the ACLU uses the power of law, policy, legislation, and advocacy to have a long lasting impact.
A key component was the integration of their CMS with their advocacy, fundraising, and email list platforms, ensuring that the website was always driving people to take a relevant action related to the content they are engaging with.
California Academy of Sciences: Digital Storytelling Platform
The California Academy of Sciences were seeking to launch a new digital storytelling platform to educate the public about environmental by leveraging a wide variety of engaging and immersive digital content.
Alliance for Climate Education: Digital Strategy and Website Redesign
About the Project
The Alliance for Climate Education focuses on educating teenagers about climate change, inspire them to take meaningful action at their schools, and train the climate leaders of the future. They provide a free school assembly that combines airtight science with pop-culture entertainment for an unforgettable experience.
When we began this project they were in a bit of a pickle. Working with a design agency that wasn't a good fit they had invested a lot of time, money, and energy into a new website that just wasn't meeting their needs. We needed to help them quickly get back on track and design a flexible platform that could grow with them over time.
I started this engagement with a quick and lightweight audit of the work done by the previous agency, and collaborated with the developers who would be responsible for building and maintaining the new website. Given the client's concerns about investing more time and money, I provided the client with three distinct options for moving forward and we settled on an approach. We focused on defining the core requirements for the initial relaunch of the website and a phased approach for adding new features over time. The goal was to have a laser focus on an MVP that could be designed and built efficiently while still providing clear value to the organization and their audiences.
With a clear strategy in hand I designed the information architecture and interaction design using a mobile first process that ensured the solution was successful across any device. A close collaboration with a visual designer and the developers resulted in a beautiful and flexible platform that can continue to grow with the organization into the future.
USA for UNHCR: Refugees Rapid Response Digital Platform
About the Project
USA for UNHCR is largest organization providing support for refugees around the world. Their website needs to respond quickly to emerging crises and quickly raise funds, while also nurturing a long-term relationship with their audiences. The client has no shortage of compelling stories and gorgeous photography, which provide the core content and help reinforce the urgency for financial support. Post launch, A/B testing and outreach strategy helped us design an ongoing research, evaluation, and optimization strategy.
After leading the initial research, discovery, and content strategy phase, I led a team of UX designers to collaboratively design the core site structure and template system. Knowing a large number of their audiences were accessing the website on mobile devices, care was taken to ensure a consistent experience across devices.
Post launch, I collaborated with a UX researcher to develop a testing plan and designed template and page layout variations for A/B testing and optimization. This allowed us to optimize key page layouts and flows with a specific focus on increasing monthly giving subscriptions.
While Earthjustice's work is truly unique their old website didn't stand out from the many environmental organization's competing for people's time and money. What makes Earthjustice unique? Their use of the law to protect the environment and their history of landmark victories that help protect our health every day.
This project focused on elevating their unique story while providing flexible issue hubs to raise awareness, engage visitors, and drive donations. The responsive design and solid technology integration empowers the Earthjustice team to quickly design, launch, and manage ongoing campaigns and usability testing.

Working closely with Earthjustice's VP of Communications we translated the latest organizational strategic plan to a clear decision matrix for prioritizing content across the website. Since they work on such a wide variety of issues the site structure was designed to make it easy to respond when the organization shifted focus to a new issue while always reinforcing their core brand identity.
After solidifying the information architecture, content strategy, and workflow and governance strategy, I designed the core interaction models that drive the layout of templates across website. A close collaboration with a talented visual designer, developer, and the client's content team resulted in a beautiful, easy to maintain, and high performing website.
Global Fund for Women: Website Redesign and Campaign Strategy
About the Project
When we first started working with Global Fund for Women, they had recently completed a strategic planning process and was seeking to merge two separate organizations. One focused on funding and supporting women change makers across the world, and the other focused on advocacy through artistic expression. While they would continue to be a grant making organization, they need to elevate ongoing campaigns that raise awareness about issues, give women a voice, and educate through art.
A big focus of the project was creating a seamless integration of the best content from each of the merging organizations. Their existing website, while not a great design, was performing relatively well, so I made sure to learn as much as I could from what was working. This discovery work led to thorough content strategy and information architecture recommendations that would build the foundation for the rest of the project.
I led the interaction design process, creating wireframes and prototypes to test interaction models and optimize user pathways through the website. The result is a beautiful website that carefully guides grantees through the grant application process and activates audiences through advocacy and fundraising campaigns.
While the Positive Coaching Alliance's programs were thriving offline, they were stuck with an outdated and hard to update website that wasn't raising money, building their email list, or engaging their dedicated followers.
They had great potential for content, including resources, tools, training, a passionate following, and hundreds of famous professional coaches backing their mission. They just needed a website that told their story and provided clear pathways to engage.

The engagement began with stakeholder and audience interviews, a content strategy workshop with the client team, and identifying key insights to drive the creative brief.
I collaborated with a talented brand strategist to integrate a new brand storytelling strategy into the site's structure, navigation, and copy for the wireframes and designs. After finalizing the information architecture, I designed a set of flexible templates to meet the needs of the content, fundraising, and ongoing campaigns that would form the foundation of the site experience.
I worked with a skillful visual designer to bring the client’s refreshed brand identity to life, and the new site was developed with a solid technology foundation that included a new CMS and seamless integration with their CRM, event management system, and e-commerce platform.
